Dares Moms to Dream Big and Helps Set Their Course

Recently, Jodi Silverman, certified life coach and founder of Moms Who Dare, in her Discover You life-visioning class, dared moms to think BIG and step way out of their comfort zone to envision their dreams of what they want to do, be, and have.

In her class, Moms Who Dare did more than more than just cut, paste, and arrange pictures on a board. For many  who felt overwhelmed or lost, she gave them a rudder to get their lives back on course and a powerful way to set and reach our goals.

Recently, I participated in her class and I wanted to share my biggest take ways.

LYNDA-What led to teaching the Discover You life-visioning class?

JODI-I had been making vision boards for myself for the past six years. We made vision boards for businesses and I worked with individual women. But I know firsthand, if you keep your goals, your visions, your dreams in front of you, they become a daily reminder to yourself and your subconscious and conscious brain that these are the things that I want to be, do, and have in my life, and it leads to inspired action, small daily action steps toward your goals. From seeing things manifest in my life and seeing things manifest in others, I knew through my journey of being a certified coach for Moms Who Dare that I wanted to create a more structured, intensive program. That I would dare myself to create an all-day workshop for women that would be more meaningful and have a bigger impact.

LYNDA-What were your expectations before, during, and after the class?

JODI-My expectation was that I could get a group of women together to have a day of inspiration, motivation, and getting clear together and have a fun, meaningful day.

LYNDA-Were there any moments during or after the program that resonated with you?

Any break through moments during the session?

JODI-I hosted this in my home, and I was so thrilled that it ended up being such a warm, intimate setting for the 10 women who came including myself. And we were working on getting clear on what we want to be, do, and have in our lives. I decided to dare myself to lead my first guided meditation, so I found a meditation that spoke to me and I printed it. While I was reading it out loud and everyone’s eyes were closed, I felt a swell in my heart as I thought about sitting there with the 10 women who said “yes.” The words of the meditation just filled me inside with emotion. That was the first “a-ha” moment when I realized that if you build it, if you create it, and you give to others, it fills you with gratitude. And everyone there kept thanking me, but I don’t know if you and the other women realize what a gift you gave me that day just by showing up.

JODI-There was one woman, as we were writing down what we want to be, do, and have, struggling with coming up with things that she wanted to have just for herself, and this was a huge break through for this woman because it was at this moment she realized that she gives so much to everybody else that she has forgotten how to ask for what she wants, and I think those moments are break throughs. I was hoping that all the women had the same realization, because as women and as moms so many of us center our world around our kids, our family, and our work. We go down this road for 18 years and forget to stop and ask ourselves: “What do I want?”

 

JODI-It was really fulfilling to work with a group of women who created a vision board around meaningful things, and I think a lot of women had an  “a-ha” moment during the creation process. When I was leading the group, I felt like this is where I am meant to be.

 

LYNDA-How do you meditate? Why? Can you walk me through it?

JODI-The word meditate used to scare me out of my mind. Once I realized it was okay to give yourself permission for your mind to wander, I could quiet my mind and bring my focus back. Meditation is creating the self-awareness that I am wandering in my thoughts, and I am going to bring it back. There are several ways to do that:

  1. Think quietly and focus on your breath and anytime you find your mind wandering, you breathe your intention in for your inhale and exhale.
  2. What really resonates most with me is guided meditation.( suggested Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey, part of the 21-day program which includes a mantra to repeat silently)It’s a way to get you to come back and be aware.

Meditation has created a calmness in me and has allowed me to be more focused. The biggest shift, which I have had and so many of us who are entrepreneurs with creative minds, is that it has allowed me to stay focused in the moment on a task without feeling anxious about what’s next.

LYNDA-Is there something that I did not address?

JODI-If you feel that a vision board is not for you, then take one goal for something that you want to have more of in your life and get a picture of it, write it  down on a 3×5 card, and  keep it in front of you as often as possible.

LYNDA-What happens when people don’t meet their expectations?

They have expectations in their head about where they want to be and by when, and let’s say that they didn’t arrive at where they thought they would be.

JODI-What I tell my coaching clients is let’s think about some of the obstacles that were in your way when you were trying to achieve these goals:

  1. What were some of the action steps you took?
  2. Looking back were they the most effective action steps?
  3. Was there something that took your attention away from it? Was there something that brought your attention back?
  4. And if so, is that the direction that you need to go? Or is this something that you want to achieve?

But my biggest advice is to not beat yourself up. Take it as a learning experience to regroup and look at what worked and what didn’t in that time frame. Let’s focus on what you can do to get back on target. She also advises before you quiet your mind, set your intention for the meditation with a question: I wonder, what could I do differently?
